Measurements of tissue water content
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD
Measurement of tissue water content from effective depths of 0.5 to 5.0 mm below the skin surface.

Multiprobe MoistureMeterD – Measurements for tissue water content and localized edema
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD is a multi-depth tissue water measurement device designed for non-invasive assessment of tissue water content in skin and subcutaneous layer. Using interchangeable probes with different measurement depths, it enables tissue water measurements from the epidermis to deeper tissue layers, depending on the application.
The device generates a high-frequency, low-power electromagnetic (EM) wave that is applied to the tissue. The reflected EM wave is measured and converted into a tissue dielectric constant (TDC) value, which is directly proportional to the water content of the measured tissue. As tissue water content increases, the TDC value increases accordingly, making the method well suited for monitoring tissue hydration and edema over time.
With measurement depths ranging from 0.5 mm to over 5 mm, Multiprobe MoistureMeterD enables layer-specific assessment of tissue water content and supports applications including skin hydration research, transdermal drug penetration studies, injectables research, edema assessment, wound healing, and subcutaneous tissue investigations. FAQs
FAQs
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD is a professional device for multi-depth tissue water assessment. It measures tissue water content at multiple depths from 0.5 to 5.0 mm in skin and underlying tissues. MoistureMeteD assessement allow detailed insights into water content distribution in tissue.
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD consists of a main unit and four different probes. This provides tissue water content profiling across several skin layers into the subdermis. Other MoistureMeters such as MoistureMeterSC (surface hydration), MoistureMeterEpiD (epidermal hydration), or MoistureMeterD Compact (tissue water and edema) measure one fixed depth. This makes Multiprobe MoistureMeterD the preferred choice when multi-level analysis is required.
Yes. Multiprobe MoistureMeterD delivers accurate and repeatable results in both laboratory and clinical environments, making it suitable for scientific studies as well as routine clinical use.
Layered tissue water content measurement reveals how tissue fluid is distributed between the epidermis, dermis, and subcutenous layer. This provides unique information for dermatology or aesthetic related research or for studies related to lymphedema or other edematous conditions, where surface-only readings are insufficient.
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD is widely used in clinical research, dermatology, and to study functioning of the lymphatic system. It supports studies on skin physiology and provides objective data for assessing the tissue water content in a scientifically validated way.

Use cases of Multiprobe MoistureMeterD in skin measurements
The flexibility of multiple measurement depths allows researchers to select the most relevant tissue layer for their application. The 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm probes have been widely used in dermatological research, cosmetic testing, and clinical studies investigating the long-term effects of injectable skin hydration treatments. These measurement depths provide valuable information on changes in tissue water content within and below the epidermis, helping researchers better understand how hydration changes develop and persist over time. They are also well suited for skincare routine evaluation, product efficacy testing, transdermal drug penetration studies, and investigations of irritant and allergic skin reactions.
The 2.5 mm probe is commonly used for assessing edema, tissue swelling, blood circulation-related changes, wound healing, burns, and thermal injuries. Its measurement depth is particularly well suited for detecting early-stage lymphedema and monitoring fluid accumulation in superficial tissues. In some cases, however, it is important to investigate deeper tissue layers as well. For applications requiring assessment of tissue water content at greater depths, the 5.0 mm probe enables measurements in deeper subcutaneous tissue and has been used in edema-related research where fluid accumulation extends beyond the measurement depth of 2.5 mm and may involve deeper tissue structures.
By providing objective tissue water measurements at multiple depths, Multiprobe MoistureMeterD supports dermatological research, cosmetic science, edema research, and long-term monitoring of tissue hydration changes, offering unique insight into how water is distributed throughout different tissue layers.

How to select the best device for comprehensive skin hydration analysis?
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD is designed for layered hydration profiling across multiple skin depths, while Delfin’s other instruments focus on specific aspects of skin hydration and barrier assessment:
MoistureMeterSC – Surface Hydration Measurement (< 30 μm)
MoistureMeterSC measures the stratum corneum to assess skin hydration in the outermost skin layer. MoistureMeterSC is ideal for product and formulation research, efficacy testing, claims validation, and assessment of irritant and allergic skin reactions (when effects happen primarily at the skin surface).
MoistureMeterEpiD – Epidermal Hydration Measurement (0.5 mm)
MoistureMeterEpiD measures water content throughout the entire epidermis, providing insight beyond skin surface hydration. The device is especially suitable for claims validation, product and formulation research, skincare routine evaluation, transdermal drug penetration studies, injectables research, and assessment of irritant and allergic skin reactions.
MoistureMeterD Compact – Tissue Water Assessment (2.5 mm)
MoistureMeterD Compact measures deep skin tissue water content. It is an ideal option for assessing swelling and edema, monitoring blood circulation-related changes, burns, wound healing, and other conditions involving fluid accumulation within the tissue.
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD – Layer-Specific Tissue Water Analysis (0.5–5.0 mm)
Multiprobe MoistureMeterD assesses tissue water at multiple depths. The device is ideal for achieving specific research objectives:
- 0.5 mm: Product and formulation research, claims validation, transdermal drug penetration, injectables, skincare routines, irritant and allergic skin reactions
- 1.5 mm: Transdermal drug penetration, injectables, irritant and allergic skin reactions
- 2.5 mm: Blood circulation studies, swelling and edema assessment, wound healing, burns and thermal injuries
- > 5 mm: Subcutaneous tissue metabolism studies and cellulite treatment evaluation
With this device's multiple depth approach, researchers can measure and evaluate hydration and tissue water changes from the skin surface down to the subcutaneous tissue layer.
VapoMeter® VX – Closed-chamber transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurements
VapoMeter® VX TEWL meter measures transepidermal water loss using the closed-chamber method. VapoMeter® VX delivers repeatable and quick TEWL measurements to evaluate skin barrier function, making it ideal for both laboratory and on-site testing.
