Skin barrier

The skin barrier protects the body from exposure to harmful irritants and also has an important role in controlling the amount of water lost by evaporation from the body through the stratum corneum into the environment.

The Delfin VapoMeter measures this water loss rate known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The values are measured in g/m²h, which is the international standard for TEWL measurements. The knowledge of the skin barrier water loss helps in assessing the condition of the skin and the function of the skin barrier.
